When I have spent hours working on knitting a sweater, I want to make sure it looks as good after a dozen washes as it did the day I was knitting it. In very simple cases, knitting can be done without tools, using only the fingers to do these tasks; however, knitting is usually carried out using tools such as knitting needles, knitting machines or rigid frames.
The second type of knitting needles are straight, double-pointed knitting needles (also called "dpns"). Some of the complicated patterns become, if not simple or easy, less intimidating once you have a few easy projects under your belt. Variegated yarns can produce interesting visual effects, such as diagonal stripes; conversely, a variegated yarn may frustrate an otherwise good knitting pattern by producing distasteful color combinations.
All other patterns emerge from these few stitches. When children learn to knit, they also learn to set goals, stick with something until the end, and accomplish something special. Once a person has mastered the art of knitting, then they should plan on making a wool blanket.
Even a beginner can make a simple scarf with novelty yarn in just a few hours, and have it look just fantastic. Not only will this provide a nice social outlet, but your new knitting friends may also be able to help you locate and use new knitting patterns and new ideas for knitting projects.
