Knitters were first believed to have begun their craft in the first few centuries AD. As we know, all knitted fabrics are made using two basic stitches, knit and purl.
A tie is visible at the left; after untying, the hank may be wound into a ball or balls suitable for knitting. Knitted garments are often more form-fitting than woven garments, since their elasticity allows them to follow the body's curvature closely; by contrast, curvature is introduced into most woven garments only with sewn darts, flares, gussets and gores, the seams of which lower the elasticity of the woven fabric still further. Even though knitting machines have advanced greatly in the last 500 years or so, however, hand knitting is still very much alive, as a very popular hobby.
You can also knit mittens, scarves using the sock-knitting machine. The local yarn store will often provide assistance if you are having trouble with your pattern, regardless of whether you purchased your knitting supplies from them or a competitor. This concept is related to the pattern you have and, if in your pattern it says there are supposed to be , for example, 5 stitches to an inch and you can make only 3, than you should and need to change the size of your knitting needles.
Skeins and balls are generally sold with a yarn-band, a label that describes the yarn's weight, length, dye lot, fiber content, washing instructions, suggested needle size, likely gauge, etc. When knitting, some knitters enclose their balls in jars to keep them clean and untangled with other yarns; the free yarn passes through a small hole in the jar-lid.
